PUBG's FAMAS and AUG Shake-Up: A 2026 Look Back at a Meta-Defining Patch
PUBG's March 2023 update swapped the AUG for the FAMAS in Care Packages, reshaping the ranked meta and early-game economy.
I've been dropping into PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS since the early access days, and if there's one patch that still gets argued about in 2026, it's the March 2023 update that dropped the FAMAS into Care Packages and kicked the AUG out of them. Back then, I set an alarm for the PC maintenance window, brewed a pot of coffee, and watched the patch notes roll in like a supply drop. The update didn't just shuffle guns; it rewired the early-game economy, the ranked meta, and even the way we read weapon stats. The proof is in the pudding: three years later, players still debate whether the FAMAS was a masterstroke or a menace.
Here's the downtime schedule that had everyone refreshing the server status page:
| Platform | PDT | CET | KST |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC | March 14, 5:00 PM - March 15, 1:30 AM | March 15, 1:00 AM - 9:30 AM | March 15, 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM |
| Console | March 22, 6 PM - March 23, 2 AM | March 23, 2 AM - 10 AM | March 23, 10 AM - 6 PM |
Before we get to the headline act, let's talk bug fixes. The devs didn't drop the ball on quality-of-life either. They patched the DBNO revive time settings not applying to Custom Matches, the instant revive when a Self-AED clashed with a teammate's revive, the News button glitch after pressing Events, the weird vehicle preview sound in Customize, the see-through-terrain bug while spectating a knocked-out player in FPP, and the sometimes-too-low game volume. PC players also got fixes for replays being created after a force quit even when replays were disabled, and for the Interact key occasionally going on strike. Console players saw a fix for a nasty Self-AED bug where the item vanished and the revive was canceled.
Map rotations were another can of worms. The Featured Map queue was closed, and the live server split into Map Selection and Random Map regions. In Map Selection, Normal Match served Erangel, Miramar, Taego, Sanhok, and Paramo, while Ranked kept Erangel, Miramar, and Taego. In Random Map regions, Normal Match rotated Erangel, Miramar, Deston, Taego, and Paramo at 20 percent each. Console matched the Random Map spread. The Test Server kept things lean with Erangel, Miramar, and Sanhok, plus AS Squad and NA Squad - FPP.
Now, the main event.
The FAMAS arrived as a Care Package exclusive, a sleek French-made assault rifle with Single, Burst, and Full-Auto fire modes. It takes up to a 6x Scope, feeds on 5.56mm, deals 39 damage per shot, has an effective range of 400m, and spits lead at 900 RPM. You could only find it in Care Packages, Secret Rooms, Lab Camps, Supply Drops, and Pillar Boxes, and it was available on every map in Normal Matches, Ranked, Training Mode, Team Deathmatch, Custom Matches, and Sandbox Mode on PC. It was not available in Custom Match - Esports Mode. I remember my first FAMAS kill like it was yesterday: a full-auto burst that melted a squad's hopes and dreams in a heartbeat.
The AUG, meanwhile, got evicted from the Care Package.
It became a world spawn on every map, with damage dropping from 42 to 41, rate of fire rising from 700 to 750, bullet velocity falling from 940m/s to 890m/s, and effective range shrinking from 90-500 to 60-450. Recoil was generally readjusted, slightly increased. The M416 took a small hit too: damage went from 41 to 40, and horizontal recoil increased slightly. The M16A4 and Mk47 Mutant, which lack Full-Auto, got their Single and Burst RPM increased to bring back that high-risk, high-reward feeling from the early days. Shotguns got hit with a spawn-rate nerf: Normal Match spawn rates, including ammo, dropped by about 30 percent on every map, and Ranked dropped by about 20 percent. ARs, DMRs, and SMGs spawned slightly more often instead. The P90 was added to Care Packages and Secret Rooms in Ranked, with a fix for its spawn rate and at least 200 rounds spawning alongside it. The Heavy Stock joined Ranked Care Packages and spawned more often, while Tactical Stocks spawned slightly less.
The devs left a comment that still rings true in 2026: they wanted a diverse gameplay environment where players choose weapons that fit their playstyle, not a single meta king. They analyzed months of player data, monitored community feedback, and tested extensively. The AUG changes aimed to stabilize the 5.56mm ecosystem and offer more options alongside 7.62mm weapons. The M416 adjustment was a minor nudge. The M16A4 and Mk47 Mutant buffs were a nod to veteran players. The shotgun spawn reduction was meant to preserve shotgun identity without making early-game a coin flip.
Quality-of-life changes were no small potatoes either.
The loot recommendation feature began highlighting lootable weapon attachments, and your Inventory highlighted recommended ammo, attachments, and equipment you had already looted. The game also celebrated its upcoming 6th Year Anniversary with decorative objects, billboards, and more on Erangel, Miramar, and Sanhok.
Deston got a new dirt race track on the peninsula south of Sancarna, which helped block sightlines and made the lowland area between the main road and the hill more interesting to traverse.
Erangel's Hall of Fame was updated to commemorate PGC 2022 winning team Natus Vincere, including photos, a trophy, crest, uniform, honor board, and poster.
The AUG was added to Team Deathmatch and Custom Matches. Mk12 and ACE32 were added to Esports Mode, while the AUG remained a Care Package weapon in Esports Mode and was removed from Esports Mode - Global Rule Settings.
UI and progression also got a facelift.
Weapon and attachment descriptions were revamped to show Damage per Bullet, DPS, Rate of Fire, Muzzle Velocity, Stability, and Effective Range more clearly. The weapon category and ammo type display improved, and the Lobby UI felt more cohesive and organized. Survival Mastery gained a Tier system: level up beyond 500, and each time you level up from Level 499, you move up a Tier and start again from Level 1. The maximum Tier was Tier 5. Normal rewards changed from BP to a Supply Loot Cache per level up, up to 499 caches, and Tier-Up rewards gave a Survival Mastery Medal that upgraded with each Tier.
Career and Profile improvements showed your current leaderboard rank of the Season and your highest rank ever, starting from at least Platinum V.
Weapon Mastery bonus XP rates were equalized. The Jammer Pack category was added to Customize, the Career - Survival page was removed, and claimed rewards were automatically granted to Customize. New item sets landed in the Hunter's Chest and Archivist's Chest, plus Survivor Pass: Deston, Bunny Academy, PCS7, and Burning Chicken Festival.
Two new item sets were added to Special Crafting.
On the technical side, Steam players got a game file integrity check pop-up when opening the client with damaged files. General in-game bugs were fixed, including smoke effects from explosions appearing natural against lighting depending on weather, which returned for Miramar - Clear, Taego - Clear, Deston - Overcast, Karakin - Sunset, and Training Mode - Sunset. Training Mode collision, texture, performance, and general issues were fixed. Attacks from a certain range no longer pass through cover and damage you. A Crossbow's Bolt no longer remains on the Drone after recall. The character's arm no longer bends awkwardly when leaning or peeking while crouching and moving. Moving Emotes no longer skip the standing animation when used while crouching or prone. The Thermal 4x Scope effect now shows up in Replay and Death Cam. The Porter and Pony Coupe sound no longer suddenly reduces from a certain perspective. Mortar-related crashes were fixed, as was an irregular crash when the Inventory is open. PC players saw fixes for a different player far off receiving damage from your fires, irregular Blizzard Zone visual flickering, and voice chat unmute issues after using shortcut keys in a previous match. Console players got fixes for Limited Interact when ADS was bound to LB, thrown Spike Trap sound per perspective, and Motorbike and Buggy sound suddenly stopping.
Vikendi got collision, texture, performance, and general fixes. The Emergency Pickup exploit with the train was fixed. The Saw-tooth Machete preview no longer shows item name and tier when hovering over the Super Soldier Set. The Workshop Key Fragment notification icon now disappears properly. The Replace Attachment interaction UI shows the correct weapon icon. PC fixes included the Sticky Bomb icon missing in Replay - Highlight, the killfeed not showing when alive player count decreased, Key Fragments being created as a minus amount after crafting a Key, and the Hideout - Weapon page Acquired/Unacquired button click area. Console fixes included the Cancel interaction UI showing the previous keybinding after changing Interact or Limited Interact during a match, and an indefinite line on the Store - Add-Ons Preview button.
Finally, clipping issues were cleaned up: Phoenix Jacket with certain weapons, Big Bad's Hood with Black Bunny Headband, female character wrists turning transparent with Twitch Rivals Bomber Jacket and Sleek Punk Top, male character with fuffenz's Shirt and High Waisted Shorts (Blue), awkward arm display when holding Shotguns in Customize, Helmet Level 2 with Apocalypse Hairstyle and NieR:Automata - 9S's Combat Goggles, partially covered sight in ADS with Azure Dragon Jacket, and irregular clipping with Venus Club Outfit when a female character crouches or switches primary weapons on PC.
So here we are in 2026, still feeling the ripples of that March 2023 patch. The FAMAS remains a Care Package trophy, the AUG is a world-spawn workhorse, and the M416 is still the old reliable that everyone loves to hate. If you ask me, that update was a bold swing that kept PUBG's gunplay from going stale. It wasn't perfect, but it was memorable. And in the battle royale genre, memorable is half the battle.
